This book was originally published in 1970. I first read it in the early '90's. I was sharing an office with a librarian and she suggested the author. Victoria Holt (Eleanor Hibbert and all of her pseudonyms) quickly became one of my favorite authors; although, in my opinion they're not all equal. I had to add it to my "e" collection as the old dog-eared paperback version is part of my physical library.

The Secret Women just takes me to another place in another time. Her hero is strong yet flawed. The whole premise is convoluted and unbelievable. Yet, the heroine is sympathic and thoughtful. I think she is a person many of us would want to know, help or simply resemble. The development of the relationships forged during the sea voyage is understandable. Something I have always particularly liked are the descriptions of the "Queen's House". I can close my eyes and see it.
Victoria Holt has been gone (died) since 1993, I believe. Some 21 years later I can still recommend her books to newbies who enjoy traveling through time and space in a book.

I have not read too much Gothic stories but from what little I have read this definitely fits the genre and even better was a very well written and absorbing read and definitely worth the price. Anna is a heroine you definitely can love and root for. And she does experience many of the happenings that take place in Gothic novels. I will definitely consider reading this author in the future.
I have always loved Victoria Holt. She is a writer from the past but you will be just as captivated in our time now. Her plots have suspense with many twists and turns. Gothic, romance, suspense. If you want true mystery and suspense without all the pages on how the couples have sex please read this. I can't believe I didn't read this growing up. Maybe I did but don't remember anyhow a great read.
This is the second book I've read by Victoria Holt. The first was The India Fan, which I enjoyed reading more than this one.

The Secret Woman was suspenseful and had great gothic creepiness. The story revolves around two sets of neighbors. Anna, whose parents died, lives with her cold, eccentric, aunt in an old house, which serves as both an antique store and a home to them. Next door, in a replica castle, live the rich Creditons, who are full of secrets, and the handsome Redvers, a mysterious man whom Anna becomes friends with.

Anna begins the narration. Later, her narration alternates with the diary entries of Anna's new friend Chantel, a nurse who takes care of Anna's aunt. I began to wonder if I could trust the narrators...

I especially liked the historic house full of interminably ticking clocks. Unfortunately, I didn't like Redvers very much, even though I felt sorry for him. Anna deserved better, and I kept wondering throughout the book if Anna would get over her feelings for him and find someone worthy to love. Would he redeem himself, or would she find someone else? It was maddening, but I read the book without pause until the last page. Despite my frustrations, the book was well written and kept me turning the pages in suspense, and I will try other books by Holt.
First published in 1970, this is a wonderful story that begins in England but eventually sweeps you to the South Pacific. Set in the late 19th century in the Victorian era, it’s the story of Anna Brett who was born in India but whose parents sent her to live with her maiden Aunt Charlotte, an antique dealer who populates her old house with furniture in the process of being sold.

Anna’s one solace is her friend Chantal Loman, the beautiful nurse who tends Anna’s ailing aunt. When Aunt Charlotte suddenly dies, Anna takes a job suggested by Chantel, as a governess in the home of a wealthy English family in the shipping business. The family has two sons, one legitimate, Rex Crediton, and one a bastard, Redvers Stretton. Anna is very attracted to Red, but then she learns he is married.

Rex is the heir apparent, consumed with the business, but Red is not unhappy about that since he loves his ships and the sea. It was on one of those South Pacific islands, however, where Red met his wife, and island beauty whose family forced him to wed her when she came up pregnant.

In this fascinating story, it seemed everyone harbored secrets, even Anna, who hid from her friend her love for Red Stretton. And even though I knew Chantel was capable of doing wrong to accomplish her purposes, I was surprised at all the twists at the end.

Holt did a good job of bringing us into the drama and the places to which the characters traveled. I could feel the heat of the island and Anna’s exhilaration with the wind on her face while they were at sea. As she and Red finally admitted their love, I could feel her emotion at finding herself in love with another woman’s husband.

No one does Victorian suspense and mystery like Holt and this is a great one!
This is my favorite Victoria Holt story. It begins with the basic elements of one of the greatest gothic romances of all time-“Jane Eyre” the plain practical governess and the handsome yet tormented hero. Then this talented author adds a more modern twist along with her trademark haunting atmosphere.

The heroine is a young business woman touched too closely by the untimely deaths of her loved ones. She is drawn into the affairs of a wealthy noble family and comes to live in a castle to teach a young boy. The castle’s two turrets are home to a tempestuous, beautiful wife and an aging mistress with a secret.

The cast of characters is well drawn and the reader is subtlety tantalized with a number of women with secrets...who is the one that truly deserves the titular role? Each one will have an important role to play out before the very satisfying conclusion!

I don’t want to forget the scope of the novel that ranges from aVictorian English seaport to a lush Polynesian island. It is all just too delicious! Enjoy!
