This was a strange little novella (It's really basically just a short story). As with a lot of mm romance eBooks, it started with a great premise, but it derailed quickly and never really lived up to its potential. It starts out on a good note, by the time I got to the last page I was scratching my head and thoroughly scratching my over what I had just read.Because it's a short story, it's very short on character development and background story. And the details that they did provide about the main charactors and their motivations seemed strange and didn't work well with the storyline. The writing style was also strange, almost as if it was written by someone who isn't American or a native English language speaker. As a result, the story repeatedly includes odd phrasing like using "mobile device" instead of "cell phone", "Can I come"?" instead of "Can I stop by?" and "I hurt so terribly bad" rather than "It's really killing me, man."
Also, the main characters just didn't even seem very likable. Brett, the college baseball player, fluctuated between coming across like a dim-witted jock and a wise, old Yoda-type (SPOILER ALERT: Brett's sudden career-ending health issue and how he handled the fallout was BEYOND weird. And the superstition-based non-bathing quirk just grossed me the hell out ). At the same time, Darius, the college acting STUDENT (not a professional actor as the overview would lead you to believe) seemed wimpy and WAY too easy to cry -- not to mention, way too quick fall in love. This made him come across as really unappealing -- despite him being described as model-handsome.
In the end, this story felt like a rushed, very strange and very naive writing class project -- rather than a fun, upbeat quick read.
